January family fun in Athlone
Get out and about in Athlone and enjoy some January family fun and fresh air. Whether you want to spend an energetic afternoon cycling or stroll by the shores of a lake, Athlone has it all with it’s impressive treks and trails.
Dust off the bicycles and enjoy over 40km of brilliant biking with the Old Rail Trail Greenway. It’s an ideal way to spend the weekend as there’s plenty of entry and exit points. You can hop off for a rest or explore the villages and attractions along the way. Starting in Mullingar, the cycle path follows the old rail track to Athlone, providing beautiful scenery along the way.
There is also a Cycle Trail at Lough Key which is ideal for families with kids’ bikes, bikes with child seats or tag-a-longs. You can also avail of the first-rate walking trails which are suited to walkers of all abilities. Lough Key has an impressive range of attractions and activities that will entertain the family for a few hours. The Lough Key Experience is a great way to spend the day exploring and learning about the flora and fauna of the forest and lakes.
The Shannon Banks nature trail is an easy stroll over a 5km loop. Younger kids will enjoy exploring and discovering the range of wildlife and plants along the riverbank. Start at the rear of Athlone Castle, along the river and the old Athlone Canal.
Explore the wooded glades and farmlands of Portlick and the Whinning peninsula of Lough Ree at The Portlick Millenium Forest Walk. Enjoy a leisurely stroll taking in beautiful views of the lake. Lough Boora Park is a beautiful landscape at the centre of Ireland which is ideal for biking, walking and nature lovers. It’s open all year-round so get some fresh air and enjoy either a short stroll or a longer trek, depending on the day!
