Taoiseach joins Irish Business Leaders to launch Cycle4haiti 2012
With the aim of raising €400,000 for The Soul of Haiti Foundation, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny today launched the third annual Cycle4haiti charity cycle, marking the start of Haiti Week 2012.
In a bid to triple last year’s fundraising target, cycling enthusiasts and novices alike will take part in the charity bike ride. Over 500 cyclists are expected to take to the streets for the event.
Starting on Saturday 5 May, the cycle will start from three locations in Dublin, Sligo and Tipperary, converging in Athlone for an overnight rest. The following day, the group will cycle a further 85km to the finish line in Eyre Square, Galway.
Speaking at the launch, Kenny said: “As a cycling enthusiast myself, I am delighted to launch this year’s Cycle4haiti and to mark the start of Haiti Week 2012.
"It is wonderful to see so many of Ireland’s business leaders and sportspersons coming together to raise funds for such a worthy cause."
Irish business leaders, including Donal Connell (CEO, An Post), Michael Dawson (CEO One4all and co-founder of The Soul of Haiti Foundation), Leslie Buckley (co-founder of Haven) and Michael Carey (chairman of Bord Bia) will be joining over 500 cyclists for the event.
TV3 presenter Aiden Cooney and Mick Galwey, Muster and Ireland rugby player, are also committed to the cycle.
€125,000 was raised by Cycle4haiti in 2011, which went directly to support the development of Soul of Haiti Foundation projects, by providing a new kitchen, playground and running water and toilet facilities for an orphanage in the fishing village of Île à Vache.
Dawson, who founded the foundation in 2007, spoke of this year’s upcoming event.
“The level of support for Cycle4haiti has been phenomenal to date. This year, we want to raise the bar and even exceed our expectations. The cycle is a small challenge that can help make a big difference to the lives of people in Haiti and people of all levels can take part,” Dawson said.
