Athlone represents Ireland at an annual Pan European Festival of sport, music, culture, food and promotion. A group of approximately 60 people travel from Athlone to a different host European country every July to participate in a week of activities and to promote Athlone and Ireland. Athlone Town Council hosted the event in 1996 and the 2005 will be held in Aranda de Duero, Spain
