LITTER MANAGEMENT PLAN
INTRODUCTION
In the policy statement 'Action Against Litter' issued by the Minister of
the Environment, a comprehensive strategy for tackling the serious problem
of litter is outlined. The strategy is built on four main foundations:
In the preparation of this management plan, Athlone Town Council have had regard
to the Government's overall strategy and also the guidelines for local authorities
as prepared by the Department of the Environment. In addition an effort is
made to carry out an appraisal of all existing litter prevention and control
programmes and to cost same where applicable and to assess what changes may
be necessary to achieve desired standards of cleanliness consistently and
the extra cost of meeting these aims.
