Welcome to the Poetry section of Writings from Athlone. So far we have featured poems by Oliver Goldsmith, Conleth Ellis, Vona Groarke, Paul Hoare, Gearoid O' Brien and Breda Sullivan.
Conleth Ellis
Conleth Ellis was an inspirational English teacher who brought his natural wit and poet’s insight to the classroom. His published writings include the following collections of poetry in English: ‘Poems’ (1961); ‘This Ripening time’ (1966); ‘Under the stone’ (1971); After Doomsday’ (1982); ‘Age of Exploration’ (1985) and ‘Darkness Blossoming’ (1989).

Oliver Goldsmith
Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was one of the most remarkable Irish writers of all times. He was born in Pallas, Co Longford but received some of his education in Athlone.

Vona Groarke
Vona Groarke grew up in Lissoy, eight miles outside Athlone. She has published five collections of poetry with the Gallery Press. She teaches at the Centre for New Writing in the University of Manchester.

Gearoid O' Brien a native of Athlone is the Senior Executive Librarian for South and West Westmeath, he is a Fellow of the Library Association of Ireland and has been writing poetry and prose for over thirty-five years.
