People of Note
We are proud of Athlone's many People of Note both past and present. We have started by featuring some well known Athlonians from times past but we will be expanding this section over time to include many Athlonians of Note from different walks of life and eras.
John McCormack
John McCormack was born in the Bawn, Athlone in 1884. He became a world-famous Irish tenor and recording artist. His greatest honour was bestowed upon him by the Pope in 1927 when he was made a Count of the Papal Court.

Oliver Goldsmith
Oliver Goldsmith was a remarkable man of letters. He is remembered best for his epic poem 'The Deserted Village' but he was also the author of the play 'She Stoops to Conquer or mistakes of a night' and the novel 'The Vicar of Wakefield'.

T.P. O'Connor
T.P. O'Connor was born in Athlone in 1848, he become a household name between Politics and Journalism. He was over forty years in politics and founded 'The Star' and T.P.s Weekly. He became the first film censor in 1917.
