U14 Feile: 6th of March
Garrycastle 2-10 Moate All Whites 2-06
Garrycastle U14s had their first competitive outing of 2010 in Hogan Park in Moate on Saturday last against a very skilful and determined Moate team.
The first half was a very low scoring affair. Ken Dolan with a close in free, opened the scoring. Ken scored again after a good passing movement involving Mark Duffy and Cian Hayden and got the third after Liam Leahy set him up after winning a Moate kick out. Mark Duffy added a fourth after great work by Cathal Mannion.
Coming up to half time Garrycastle were leading by 4pts to 2, however, disaster struck when a goal bound shot took a wicket deflection and wrong footed Eoghan Slevin to give Moate a 1-02 to 0-4 half time lead.
Moate started the second half by adding a further point and at this stage, Garrycastle had it all to do to get back into the game. However, in the next 15 minutes Garrycastle added a further 2 goals and 6 points to race into a commanding 10 point lead. Eric Kearney and Liam Leahy started to dominate midfield and supply good quality ball to the forwards.
Mark Duffy with 2 goals, one a 20 yard effort and the other a penalty, Eric Kearney with 3 points, one free after a foul on Ronan Mulvihal, another after a good passing from Shane McHenry and Cian Hayden and a third after more good work by Liam, Cian and Mark. Ken Dolan chipped in with another brace of points after great play involving Ronan Mulvihal, Cian, Eric and Cathal Mannion.
With 10 minutes to go it looked like Garrycastle were safely into the next round, however, Moate had other ideas. They started to dominate midfield and put huge pressure on the Garrycastle rearguard. It required some outstanding defending from Evan Dalton, Frank Farrell and Andrew Grogan to keep the goal intact. On two occasions the defense was breached, but Eoghan Slevin produced 2 stunning saves to frustrate the All Whites. Moate did eventully find the net, but, in the end Garrycastle managed to hold on and run out winners by 4 points.
In addition to the above, Sean Kilgarriffe had and outstanding hour in defense and Ben Kennady did a fine marking job on a very skillful Moate danger man.
Garrycastle will be delighted with this victory and with some aspects of the performance, but will be concerned that they allowed Moate to get back into the game. It was also very encouraging that all of the subs made an impact when introduced and the management will be very pleased as they look forward to the season ahead.
Training continues on Monday and Thursday at 6.30 pm.
Team: Eoghan Slevin, Sean Kilgarriffe, Eric Kearney, Frank Farrell, Eric McCormac, Ben Kennedy, Andrew Grogan, Liam Leahy, Evan Dalton, Mark Duffy, Cian Hayden, Darragh Mc Cormack, Ronan Mulvihill, Kenneth Dolan, Cathal Mannion, Joseph Byrne Eoin Duignan, Sean Mulvihal, Shane McEnry
U-14 Challenge: 2nd of March
2nd March 2010.
Garrycastle U14s had a very useful challenge game against a strong St.Brigids outfit on Tue evening last in Kiltoom. This was the proverbial game of two halves, with Garrycastle dominating the first half and St.Brigids coming back strongly in the second.
Garrycastle, playing in an unfamiliar blue strip, played some lovely combination football in the first half. Every player showed great commitment and heart in competing for every ball. The defense and midfield were well on top and limited the Brigids attack to very few opportunities for scores. Each of the 6 forwards scored from play and combined very well with each other. The half time score was Garrycatle 3 -10, St.Brigids 1-3.
In the second half Garrycastle faced a stiff breeze and Brigids introduced some very strong physical players to the forward line. This posed some new problems for the Garrycastle defense and midfield. Despite this, the team produced a very determined display and managed to pick off a further 2 goals and 3 points on the break. However, as the second half progressed, the Garrycastle lads ran out of steam and allowed Brigids in for some crucial late scores.
The final score ended Garrycastle 5-13, St.Brigids 7-10.
This was the first outing of the year for this team and the management was very encouraged by the skill and commitment of all 18 players used.
